Although we think vaping has only been around in recent times, ancient Egyptians were known to use hot stones to vape herbs and Indians invented their first shisha thousands of years ago. Joseph Robinson came up with the first idea of an e-cigarette in 1927, but it wasn’t until many years later in 1963 that Herbert Gilbert patented the first ‘smokeless non-tobacco cigarette’.
Herbert Gilbert’s creation looked very like the modern e-cigarettes we know today containing flavour cartridges, heating elements and smokeless flavoured air. Unluckily for Gilbert, the 1960s was the height of the tobacco cigarette era, with advertising having no concerns at all with the health implications of smoking and pushing the ‘trendy’ tag that smoking at that time resembled. His patent ended up expiring, leaving it open for others to claim recognition for the idea.
Who Actually Made the First E-cigarette?
Hon Lik was a medical researcher from China who had a huge smoking addiction and had previously buried his dad to lung cancer. It is said that he forgot to take his nicotine patch off one evening before bed and had one of the most unusual but eye-opening dreams of his life. In his dream he fell into the sea where he began to drown. His lungs were filling up with sea water but a few seconds later, the water turned to harmless vapour and he could breathe again!
After much research he turned his dream into real life, releasing the first e-cigarette to the public in 2006 consisting of a battery, a plastic cartridge containing a nicotine solution and an ultrasonic atomizer.
Development of the E-cigarette
Invented by British brothers Umer and Tariq Sheikh, the atomizer was replaced with a cartomizer. The cartomizer was a lone disposable unit making it easier to use than the separate cartridge and atomizer that had previously been used. This was the point when the e-cigarette began to grow in popularity reaching an immense market.

Since humble beginnings in the early 2000s, the e-cigarette has developed hugely and continues to grow offering something to suit all tastes.
